Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EnableMath System?

EnableMath is the first comprehensive toolset designed to deliver instructional presentation content on the Web. EnableMath is composed of the Faraday visual authoring system, the Maxwell adaptive assignment system, and the Marconi content communication system. These tools allow students to see and manipulate the visual patterns that are the key to understanding difficult concepts. It is the ideal platform for educators who are looking to create dynamic instructional content that leverages the power of the Web. EnableMath is a Java applet, and it requires Sun Microsystems's Java plug-in to run.

What is the recommended system configuration?

While EnableMath will work on virtually any computer connected to the Internet, there are certain minimum requirements that we recommend to make the most of your experience: A minimum of 128MB of RAM (256MB and above recommended).

1) A Pentium II or faster processor.
2) A 56KB or faster connection to the Internet.
3) 800 X 600 screen resolution (1024 X 768 recommended).
4) Windows XP on the PC and MacOS 10.3.9 on the Macintosh.
5) Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or above, Internet Exlorer 6.0 or above, or Safari 1.3 or above.
6) Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2 or above
.

EnableMath will work on a less powerful system, but the applet will not perform as well as it would on a machine configured to our recommendations. For users with a dial-up connection to the Internet, the most noticeable difference will be a longer wait time for the initial download of the Java plug-in and our applet.

What happens the first time I load EnableMath?

In order to download EnableMath, you need to click the Start button on our home page. Here's what will happen the first time you that:
  1. First, we will detect whether you have Sun Microsystems's Java plug-in installed on your computer. If you don't have the plug-in installed, or if you have an older version installed, you will be redirected to a page where the plug-in can be downloaded and installed in a few mouse-clicks. This is a one-time download.
  2. Next, the applet JAR file will be downloaded to your computer. A JAR file is simply a way of packaging the various Java files that comprise our applet into a single file for easy downloading. The only time you will need to download a new JAR file is if we make changes to our software (in which case your browser will detect that an updated file is available and initiate the download automatically) or if you clear your browser's cache.
  3. The next thing you'll see is a Java plug-in security warning. The reason you see this is because after we create our JAR file, we digitally sign it with a certificate provided by a trusted third party, in this case Thawte Consulting. The security warning provides you with two important pieces of information: it indicates that Thawte has verified the authenticity of our applet and it indicates whether the digital certificate has expired. Click "Always" and then our applet will load in a separate browser window.

What platforms are supported?

EnableMath runs on all versions of Microsoft Windows starting with Windows 98. It supports Internet Explorer 5.0 and higher, Netscape Navigator 6.0 and higher, and the Mozilla/Firefox open source browser. It also runs on Mac OS X with with the Safari web browser.

I'm using an unsupported browser. What do I do?

If you are using an older version of Netscape or Internet explorer, you should upgrade to the latest version. Our recomended browser is Firefox. Click the Get Firefox button to download the latest release.

I have a message on the screen saying that I need the Java plug-in. What do I do now?

The first time you access our site you should be automatically redirected to a page that will launch the Java plug-in download for you, but in rare cases, that process fails. If that happens to you, simply go to our Java download page and click on the Get Java Now link to download the plug-in.

I'm trying to download the Java plug-in on my machine and I'm getting a warning that I need to have Service Pack 2 installed.

You will see this warning if you are running Windows 2000 without Service Pack 2 or later. A service pack is Microsoft's method of releasing bug fixes and security enhancements for its operating systems. Go to Microsoft's Service Pack download page to get the latest service pack for the Windows 2000 platform.

I'm having problems running the EnableMath on Mac OS X.

Mac OS X comes with the Java Run-time Environment (including the plug-in) already installed, so you don't need to download that component. If you are having problems running EnableMath on OS X, the most likely problem is that you are using a browser other than Safari. Safari is the only Macintosh browser that supports version 1.4 of the JRE. EnableMath requires version 1.4 or above of the JRE.
